whether和if的區(qū)別和用法：
一、引導(dǎo)賓語從句,一般既可用whether也可用if.但
1 or not放在whether之后時,只能用whether不用if.
I don’t know whether or not he will come. 我不知道他是不是回來.
注1：如果or not放在whether所引導(dǎo)的從句句尾,則可以用if來替換.
I don’t know whether/if he will come or not.我不知道他是不是回來.
2 在強調(diào)任意選擇時,用whether…or,此時不用if替換whether.
He asked me whether I wanted to go there by train or by bus.他問我是想乘火車還是坐公共汽車去那里科普童謠.
注：whether和or一起還有“不管”之意,引導(dǎo)讓步狀語從句.
Whether he drives or takes the train, he will be here on time.不管開車來還是乘火車來,他都會準時到.
3 雖引導(dǎo)賓語從句,但為了強調(diào)賓語部分,也可把從句放在句首,此時只用whether不用if.

4 從句作介詞賓語時只用whether不用if.

⑶We have a doubt whether it is true.(同位語從句) 我們懷疑那是不是真的.
注:whether引導(dǎo)主語從句放在主句之后時可用if來代替.

三、用在動詞不定式之前時用whether不用if.

在引導(dǎo)主語從句時，一般用whether，而不用if。在引導(dǎo)賓語從句時，一般情況下whether和if可以通用。從句中含有or，強調(diào)選擇，這里只宜用whether;賓語從句中包括一個if從句，則宜用whether)等。
引導(dǎo)賓語從句
這時兩者的含義區(qū)別很小，一般可通用。
I don't know whether/if they will come to help us.
但是，當whether與or not連成一個詞組時，whether不可換用if。
I don't know whether or not they will come for our help.
若whether和or not不連在一起，在口語中可以用if取代whether，當然也可以用whether。
I don't care if/whether your car breaks down or not.我不在乎您的車是否是會出故障。
此外，還有三種情況值得注意：
(1)在介詞后面只能用whether，不能用if。
I am not interested in whether you'll come or not.
(2)在動詞不定式之前，只能用whether，不能用if。
He doesn't know whether to stay or not.
(3)在及物運動discuss后的賓語從句中，只能用whether，不能用if。

其他
1.if可以用來引導(dǎo)一個否定的賓語從句，whether則不能用來引導(dǎo)否定的賓語從句，因為它表示正反兩方面的選擇意義比較強。
2.if除引導(dǎo)賓語從句外，還可以引導(dǎo)條件狀語從句，作“是否”解。在容易引起混淆產(chǎn)生歧義的情況下，就不可用if，而須用whether。
